International Day of Families

Families of all shapes and sizes are at the core of building peaceful and prosperous societies. Creative thanks the families it works with around the world for their commitment to positive change. May 15, 2019

My role as the Clinical Guide for the Proponte Más program in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, gives me the responsibility and privilege of overseeing the implementa- tion of our family counseling model for violence prevention in more than 250 households each year. When I started in this position in 2017,

I am constantly reading, re-reading and thinking through strategies that would best address each household’s unique situ- ation, while keeping focused on the model we’ve developed. We are a group of curious, avid learners and we like to say that we perform a bit of magic when we help families and youth

build resilience to violence. We try to think outside the box and make a lot out of a little—supporting families to develop the strengths that already exist while mitigat- ing risk factors. We understand that a family is its own world. Each household has its nuances and challenges, but also contains a wealth of bravery and hope. Despite often feeling frustrated and drained by the intense heat of the tropics, we stay committed to our work for the sake of our families. The most rewarding part of all this work is when a family gives us a gift of lemonade or a loaf of bread and tells us that we’ve made a difference. Amother’s thanks as she takes her son’s hand makes it all worthwhile. n

I knew immediately I was undertaking a challenge that could only be tackled by a united team. We had to keep our focus on Creative’s Family Systems Model for violence prevention, while still grappling with the everyday problems of Honduras’ most at-risk families. Each of my team’s trips into these vul- nerable communities is an achievement, and I am so proud of them for managing to make a difference in such difficult circumstances. Our beneficiaries can face tough situations of violence in their com- munities, threats from local gangs, lack of opportunity and migration. It is easy to feel overwhelmed. But one of the things I enjoy most about my job is helping my colleagues discover their own abilities to handle these issues.
